Preparing Your Lawn for the Spring

Today marks the beginning of spring!

We know you are ready for spring after this long winter, but is your lawn?  To prepare your lawn for the changing seasons, we recommend doing the following:

Aeration. A spring aeration is important because it provides water and air to your lawn’s roots, allowing new growth and healthier roots.  Timing of a spring aeration is imperative.  Waiting too late into the spring when the soil temperature reaches above 55 degrees will make you lawn more susceptible to aggressive weeds.

Clean-Up.  Failing to clean your lawn of debris can cause many problems.  First, yard debris can block the sun from reaching your turf, making it difficult for grass to sprout.  Second, leaving debris can lead to grass and flower fungus and/or disease.

Fertilization.  Spring fertilization should do three things for your lawn.  First, it should provide the required nutrients to recover from the harsh winter weather.  Second, the fertilizer should include a pre-emergent that will create a barrier to prevent weed germination.  Third, it should provide your turf with nutrients that will help your lawn prepare for the changing seasons.

Pest Control.  The spring and summer bring many unwanted yard guests that can be damaging to your turf, plants and flowers.  Spraying for pests and insects in the spring allows you to avoid the inconvenience before it becomes problematic.

Mulching.  This is the final step to making your lawn look picturesque.  Mulch requires minimum upkeep and provides an eye-catching finish.
